How to Play
Choose Your Variant & Mode
Pick a rules variant (classic Nine Men's Morris is the default), then play versus AI at Easy, Normal, or Hard, or 2 Players on one device. New to morris? Press Tutorial for a guided walkthrough.
Place
Take turns placing one piece onto any empty intersection. Each side has nine pieces to deploy.
Move & Fly
Once all pieces are placed, slide along a line to an adjacent empty point. With exactly three pieces left, you may fly to any empty point.
Mill & Capture
Form a mill (three of your pieces in a row), then remove one opponent piece. You may not take a piece from a mill unless every opponent piece is in a mill. Win by reducing them below three pieces or leaving them with no legal moves.
Morris Variants
Every variant from Wikipediaβs Nine Menβs Morris article is in the Variant menu. The current variantβs rules show under the board while you play.
- Three Menβs Morris
- 3 pieces each on a 3Γ3 board with diagonals. After placing, move any piece to any empty point. First line of three wins.
- Nine Holes
- The medieval English version: like Three Menβs Morris, but diagonal lines donβt win.
- Tapatan
- From the Philippines. Pieces slide one step along a line. The first piece canβt go in the centre, which keeps the opening fair.
- Achi
- From Ghana. 4 pieces each, so only one point stays empty and every move slides into the gap.
- Five, Six & Seven Menβs Morris
- Smaller two-square boards with no flying. Seven Menβs Morris adds a cross in the centre for two extra mills.
- Nine Menβs Morris (with or without flying)
- The classic game. Some old rule books leave out flying, so you can play it either way.
- Lasker Morris
- Chess champion Emanuel Laskerβs version: 10 pieces each, and you may move a piece instead of placing one from the very first turn.
- Eleven & Twelve Menβs Morris
- The classic board plus four diagonal lines that make extra mills. In Twelve Menβs Morris a full board during placement is a draw.
- Morabaraba
- South Africaβs competitive game with 12 βcowsβ. Only one capture per move, a mill you just broke doesnβt count if re-formed straight away, and ten moves each on three cows is a draw.
Captain Tips
Build Double-Mill Traps
Set up two potential mills sharing a point. Alternating one piece between them forces a capture every turn.
Control Centre Crossings
The four middle-ring midpoints connect in four directions. Holding them gives you more ways to threaten.
Block Early
Spot a potential mill two moves away and occupy the third point before your opponent completes it.
Think Ahead on Capture
When you close a mill, remove the piece that breaks the opponent's strongest future mill.
