Learn the real night sky one constellation at a time. Find each one the way people always have, by hopping from stars you already know. Join its stars, then read its story, how to find it, and how it has guided travellers.
Every star is in its real place and at its real brightness.
The star positions and brightnesses come from the Hipparcos space telescope catalogue, and the constellation figures and names from the open-source d3-celestial project by Olaf Frohn, used under its BSD licence (Copyright © 2015, Olaf Frohn; all rights reserved; redistribution permitted with this notice).
The 88 constellations are the ones astronomers officially recognise. Most of their stories come from Greek and Roman tradition, which gave them their names, but every culture has read the same stars in its own way, and the atlas includes some of those stories where they are well documented.
Sixteen constellations are ready to find now, from the Great Bear to the Southern Cross. More will join the atlas over time.
Come back whenever you like. Your atlas will be here, and so will the stars.
